I have a question for Dr Patricia and would love for anything Jon could add. The webinars were so helpful and it’s very clear most if not all of the eduction is with parents. When parents make an appointment to see me (as a nutritionist) they of course bring their child in but I’m finding there’s not much I can discuss with the kids. I was wondering how Dr Patricia organises appointments. I’m not sure how parents would respond if I carefully explain that the following sessions would be best with only them, so we can discuss habits within the house. Parents seem to feel its the children that need educating. Have you found this too and any recommendations would be very helpful. Thanks again.
Studies show that if the child is 8 or older that interventions should be aimed to them. I treat the whole family, but I do not undervalue the importance of teaching the children too. When things get sticky, like when the parents have a lot of pathology in their table talk or there are many stressors at home I will kick the children out of the room for a bit to make sure I can speak freely with the parent. This helps so the parent can open up and not feel defensive. Other times with teens when I feel like there is more going on then the teen is disclosing I kick the parent out of the room.
For overcoming barriers to exercise I work quite a bit with the child directly to see what they are passionate about. Also I always have the child state what foods they like for the grocery lists and nutrition education. We make lists of fruits and vegetables that they like and then explain how to put together meals and snacks. They learn how to feed younger siblings when they babysit or when they go off to college they can be self sufficient. Many enjoy cooking and I share recipes with them.
I tell children that they know best how much to eat, by listening to their tummies. They often feel relieved and empowered.
Bringing siblings and extended family generally makes for more success. This is about the family eating healthy and often times the child is visibly relieved that everyone including thinner siblings need to eat the same way.
Sometimes in difficult families I see a lot of finger pointing between kids and parents and it goes both ways. I remind everyone to focus on today being healthy and not yesterday. I often times I have to repeat this, but eventually it sinks in.
The families that are toughest to treat are those who want me to “fix” their kids. That being said involving kids is a way of planting good seeds for a lifelong relationship with food and health.

I would like to find out some more information about Patricia’s camp… could she share a little more about her program please. My goal is to work with schools. I wish to be a solution in Primary and Secondary food for schools. I really feel connected to Patricia. I wish to awake people myself. Empower them for a self care and create a positive change in their life. I myself is trying to lead by example, however, I have also experienced how important the primary food is. I feed my family with organic, biodynamic whole food, living positively on a small farm, yoga family with many family activities and lots of love and my daughter was still able to suffer with bulling at the very prestiges private school… I hope we are at the end of it now, but this experience showed me, how easy we can got off balance… I was able to recognise many signs on her. Her weigh never suffered as she had clean food at home, but she scratched her body and made scars… it lasted for just over a year… Not an easy journey, but being in a personal development industry myself, I know, things happen for a reason, and it looks like I had to experience it myself as well… I know I will be able to connect with the kids on a much deeper level… I have not read your book yet, but I have received it now, which is great π Thanks for this amazing experience, xoxo Janet

You mentioned it is worthwhile for a child to have a sleep study if there is suspected sleep apnea, if the study shows they do have this condition what do they normally recommend as treatment? I’m hoping the recommendation isn’t just to lose weight as it wouldn’t give any additional help.

So you are in charge of what is being served at your table. Your child is then responsible for deciding if and how much to eat from what YOU serve. So as a parent it is reasonable and necessary to say no (and you don’t need a reason.). A firm and calm no is best. My mom taught me that as soon as you start raising your voice in parenting they know they have got you, that little pearl keeps me in check.
Some tips might be to not even go down those aisles or not take her if you are not up for it. Also feed her before you shop, if she is hungry it will be worse. There is no shame in shopping alone for a bit. Getting kids involved in shopping is an advanced skill. Wait until you are ready and confident.”
Hi – I am wondering what kind of almond and coconut milk Jon uses? I have not found any brand that does not contain that carageen (sp?) ingredient. I can make my own and it’s delicious but does not keep long and I have not found a good use for the by product (ground nuts). I have tried using it as a almond meal replacement and it’s horrible, has no flavor, makes any baked good taste bland and have strange consistency.
Jon either makes his own or looks for organic brands without additives. You can use the ground nuts in energy balls to add protein and add other ingredients like raw cacao for flavor!
From this week’s session there was not a lot of discussion around dairy. I can typically get my families to transition to non-dairy milks, but cheese seems to always be a struggle when I am working with families with other health issues (food allergies, digestive problems, etc.)
From a weight loss perspective, what are your thoughts/concerns about dairy? Do you encourage non-dairy alternatives?
In general dairy can cause inflammation which works against allowing your body to release weight. We recommend if you consume dairy to go for organic products in moderation. Cheese seems to be the most difficult of dairy products to ditch because it contains casomorphins which have an opioid effect causing the addiction. Food for thought!

This question is very controversial. Jon and I are not even exactly aligned on dairy. From my very basic approach, as long as the dairy is unsweetened; it is reasonable. I have never taken a child off of dairy to lose weight and I currently have over an 84% success rate. Cheese and plain yogurt are also recommended by my team and I often especially with fruits and vegetables as snacks. If a family feels strongly about not having dairy then I help them find unsweetened versions of almond, cashew, or other milks. If dairy is not agreeable to the child there are many options. But from my perspective I am more concerned about the downside of a child feeling restricted or feeling that they are on a ‘diet’ than if they have unsweetened dairy products available at the home and out. Serves: 8
Preparation time: 10 minutes

ΒΎ cup sunflower seeds
ΒΌ cup sesame seeds
ΒΎ cup desiccated coconut
1 cup chia seeds or flax seeds

Method:
1. Place all ingredients in food processor. Mix together until well combined and beginning to stick together.

Hi guys, sorry if I’m preempting what you might be covering on a future webinar. But I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to talk to a child about their weight and the reason they have coming to see me (as a Nutritionist helping them to lose weight) without making them feel bad. I find some parents bring kids in and don’t explain to them why. I’m obviously not wanting to say ‘you’re here to see me because you’re overweight’. Any suggestions of how to speak to children would be very helpful.
Great question. It depends on the child’s age and level of development. I generally ask the child or teen if they know why they were referred to me. Then go from there. If they do not know why, I will probe for co-morbidities like problems with the liver (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease), high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol or triglycerides or being at risk for diabetes. I don’t point out the weight specifically.
I focus on being healthy so they will be healthy in the future. I emphasize what a blessing it is to meet them while they are young and we can change a few things to make their whole family healthier in the future.
If the child or teen is worried or bothered by their weight I dig deeper to see the extent of body image issues they might have. I always redirect from weight to health with regards to patients and parents who will also need your direction. I also sincerely look for their internal and external strengths and work to build them up as well as de-emphasizing the weight.
Part of treatment and evaluation is monitoring for depression and pathology in self image. Team up with a mental health expert if you have concerns regarding either.
I hope this helps. I could write a whole book on this one question.

Thanks Jon, I personally haven’t been overweight but had stuggled with Bulimia since my early teens, so I’m very conscious of the negative impact these experiences have on self esteem and relationships with food. hi my name is Crystal and I have three beautiful children. My oldest Jonas in 9 yo and weighs 135 lbs. As a 14 month old he was burned and spent a month in ICU and another month and a half in the burn unit. The year following his burns I couldn’t get him to eat and he looked like a human skeleton. He then had a skin graft surgery and the weight started to come on. I know his fat switch is on all he can think about is when his next meal will come. We live an active life and I try to feed him good foods. He loves a good green drink which I put chia flax coconut oil omega 3s and lots of kale spinach blueberries and bananas in. Hi is the sweetest boy you will EVER meet. He is so intelligent and kind. I don’t want his weight to continue to hold him back in life anymore especially when he will continue to struggle with his burns and more surgeries in the future. I am so excited for this program and hope it can help me help my sweet boy. Any suggestions I am open to.
I also want to add that for years he struggled with sleep and not feeling safe and now that he listens to your visualizations he now goes to sleep quickly and deeply!
It’s great that he like healthy foods like green drinks with chia seeds and coconut oil. Let him eat whenever he’s hungry but keep feeding him super healthy foods. It will help normalize his weight and also his health in so many ways.
In the mean time working through emotional issues to help make him feel safer will also help him tremendously.

Typically it’s a C-PAP machine, which is a very effective, non-invasive treatment.

hi my name is Crystal and I have three beautiful children. My oldest Jonas in 9 yo and weighs 135 lbs. As a 14 month old he was burned and spent a month in ICU and another month and a half in the burn unit. The year following his burns I couldn’t get him to eat and he looked like a human skeleton. He then had a skin graft surgery and the weight started to come on. I know his fat switch is on all he can think about is when his next meal will come. We live an active life and I try to feed him good foods. He loves a good green drink which I put chia flax coconut oil omega 3s and lots of kale spinach blueberries and bananas in. Hi is the sweetest boy you will EVER meet. He is so intelligent and kind. I don’t want his weight to continue to hold him back in life anymore especially when he will continue to struggle with his burns and more surgeries in the future. I am so excited for this program and hope it can help me help my sweet boy. Any suggestions I am open to.
I also want to add that for years he struggled with sleep and not feeling safe and now that he listens to your visualizations he now goes to sleep quickly and deeply!

It’s great that he like healthy foods like green drinks with chia seeds and coconut oil. Let him eat whenever he’s hungry but keep feeding him super healthy foods. It will help normalize his weight and also his health in so many ways.
In the mean time working through emotional issues to help make him feel safer will also help him tremendously.
I’m a holistic nutritionist in Western Australia and I am starting to see many kids with weight issues, I’m so excited to gain more tools and insight to really help (not through restriction and creating unhealthy relationships with food). Thanks for doing this training π

My question….
My children are teenagers and young adults, some live at home and we prepare meals together (imagine the conflict of interests in the kitchen between, flavor, appearance, international influences, “calories” etc
all BUT Nutritious, only mom cares about “that” !
Can this program help introduce the GM nutritious way of eating to them ?
