I bought Simply Right’s vitamin D – 3. Which says 5,000 IU of vitamin d which is 1,250% of daily value. The vitamin D is (as D3 Cholecalterol). I was advised from Nomi Shannon I think for digestion help. I have also been advised to take magnesium for panic attacks from another member of the forum. What are your thoughts?

    aloha Jon,
Interesting article & it makes sense to me.
    But brings up this question.
    What about a calcium/magnesium supplement?
    1000 unit calcium & 500 units magnesium.
    Does this cause better absorption?
Or would you recommend forgetting that all together ?
It’s a chiropractor friend of mine who swears by this for flexibility, rather than for bone help.

Jon do you have any in site on this! ?This was on my mind to ask too Emma. Just a little different because of this article I read from Hungry for Change. The aricle should be at this site (www.care2.com/greenliving…)

Another factor in decreased magnesium levels has been our focus on getting enough calcium. It’s a delicate dance–calcium depletes magnesium yet calcium functions best when enough magnesium is present. Studies indicate that taking a calcium supplement without enough magnesium can increase the shortage of both nutrients. Researchers have found that many Americans have five times as much calcium as magnesium in their bodies, although the proper ratio for optimum absorption of both minerals is two to one.

With such widespread magnesium deficiency one might think that magnesium supplements would be called upon, but studies show that magnesium is not easily absorbed through the digestive tract. The presence of specific foods or drugs, certain medical conditions, and the chemistry of a person’s stomach acid can render magnesium supplements ineffective.

This brings us to Epsom salt. Known scientifically as hydrated magnesium sulfate, Epsom salt is rich in both magnesium and sulfate. While both magnesium and sulfate can be poorly absorbed through the stomach, studies show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt! Magnesium and sulfate are both easily absorbed through the skin. Sulfates play an important role in the formation of brain tissue, joint proteins and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract. They stimulate the pancreas to generate digestive enzymes and are thought to help detoxify the body of medicines and environmental contaminants.

    Hi Judy,

That’s the standard medical wisdom, that you need calcium in the form of calcium supplements to make healthy bones and teeth. But there’s a lot of research that contradicts that advice and many leading doctors and health experts, such as David Wolf, Dr. Ron Rosedale and Dr. Carolyn Dean who are suggesting that Calcium supplements can cause hardening of the arteries, calcification of joints and inflammation. I happen to agree with them. That being said, I believe you should always follow your doctors advice. It’s your job to chose your doctor but once you do, you should listen to him/her.

You can increase your absorption of minerals by reducing insulin resistance, which is basically everything we teach at The Gabriel Method. So if you’re following our approach, you’re increasing your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Now I’m Really confused! I thought I needed calcium to make strong bones and muscles and even to lose weight!

I’m sure my doctor will not know anything about this. How do I balance my hormones and increase my absorption of minerals?

  6. Mary Twhigg says:

That is interesting and a reversal of the usual message.
