Tim Noakes

Professor Noakes was born in Zimbabwe and he studied at the University of Cape Town, where obtained an MD and a DSC in exercise science. He’s a professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town. He’s also the director of the university’s research unit for exercise science and sports medicine, and co-founder of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. Professor Noakes has published more than 450 scientific publications and has been cited more than 12,000 times in the scientific literature. In 2003, he received the UCT Book Award for The Lore of Running, which is considered the bible in the sport. His other books include Rugby Without Risk, Bob Woolmer’s Art and Science of Cricket, his scientific autobiography, Challenging Beliefs and Waterlogged, The Serious Problem of Over Hydration in Endurance Sports. His most recent new book is Real Meal Revolution. Professor Noakes has received several major awards for his contribution to sports science and has been physically active all his life and has run more than 70 marathons and ultra-marathons.     That was a very interesting and informative interview. It all makes common sense however to cut out grains, rice, pasta and potato altogether is drastic and to my head almost equals the big D word. It will be interesting to see if the South Africian government does one day change the standards for food and whether the rest of the world follows.

      Perhaps just try to reduce or substitute those foods where you can and where you feel you can handle without creating the diet mentality.
