Just watched this video and thank you for the anti-inflammatory foods. I look forward to adding these to help further reduce inflammation in my body. Interesting info about the strengthening the muscles above the week joint. I have struggled with my feet (plantar facitis) and my knees, (loss of cartilage) and now pain in my hips… I want to power through, but don’t want to damage myself while getting bendy.

    • Denaleigh -Gabriel Method Team says:

      Hi Sherry,
Glad that you enjoyed this class. Hope you can join us live for the next one?
Let us know how you go with strengthening those points.
      Den

      • Sherry Funk says:

I definitely feel stronger and my knees are actually getting better – don’t understand why I suddenly have pain in hips and lower back though — so weird like the pain is trying to find it’s way out but …

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

      Hi Sherry,
you may find the most recent HangOut I did valuable as I showed some exercises to strengthen the muscles of the legs.
      Hopefully you can do these.
Plantar Fascitis is nasty but can be overcome. have you had treatment? I found solid massage of my feet, hurts like mad, but was the answer for me.
Let me know how you go.
      All the best,
      Brian

      • Sherry Funk says:

Hi Brian – yup plantar is super hard and I’ve had it now for a year and a half in both feet after a trip to Guatemala and bad footwear. I have tried lazer therapy … No good, I had to get a cortisone shot so I could walk down the aisl at my daughters wedding … Never again, doc said it’s the worst case of deep tissue inflammation and damage he has ever seen 🙁 , finally got coverage through our workmans compensation for athletic therapy cause it was a work trip and it was starting to work but coverage ran out and I found to be honest that the negativity of the therapist was a real bummer … I got orthotics but looking for the way to healing

        • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Sherry this may seem like a weird therapy but you could try this:
freeze water in a plastic bottle and roll the instep of your foot up and down with force, often.
          Every day or more.
Also alternating between cold water for 5 minutes and then warm water for 5 minutes, then stretch foot and repeat.
Few of the things I use in my clinic which can sometimes help.

          • Sherry Funk says:

That’s great Brian – I will try that … At work I also try to roll a golf ball every day … I could be more intentional about this as an everyday routine

  2. Patricia Barber says:

Need a knee replacement. How about using the elliptical machine? Enjoyed hanging out with you. It was fun and informative.

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Hi Patricia, elliptical machines tend to be softer on your knees however if you experience pain with using it, I’d think best to stop. Sometimes a stationary bike works well for those with knee trouble as you can adjust the resistance to be light.
Thanks for your positive feedback too, appreciate it 🙂

  4. Patricia Barber says:

Brian, what about an elliptical machine?

  5. Donna O says:

Hi Brian, Will the hang outs ever be available to download? It would be easier to workout along with you that way 😀 I need the leadership because you keep me up to pace and in form 😀 thanks for everything !

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Not sure Donna, let me find out and get back to you. Good question!

    • Janine -Gabriel Method Team says:

      Hi Donna,

At this time the Google Hangouts are not downloadable due to their format. However we are looking into a work around to see if there is a possibility to in the future. Our apologies that this feature is not available yet!

  6. Veronique Mivelaz says:

Well done Brian ! You really know how to make us move ! And I liked the format of information and work-in together. Looking forward to next month. Thanks

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Thank you Veronique I like the format too.
I’m really keen to have you guys training with me, at least 1 x per month and if it works, maybe more.
      All the best,
      Brian

  7. Robin - Adelaide says:

I have arthritis (particularly bad in one knee which is always swollen) as well as having trouble with tightness of the ilio-tibial band. I recently saw a physio who started me with a range of stretches and static quads twice a day.

She then moved me onto squats twice a day instead of the static quads. I’d like to know what you think. I’ve wondered if the squats should be done every second day. And then I wonder if it’s ok to do static quads twice a day AND squats every second day.

I also want to know more about the difference between the squats and static quads as types of exercise. One being isometric, the other being (?), and what do they mean in terms of uses, actions and recommended frequency.

Also, I live in Adelaide and have seen you in the distance making a fitness video in the park. It made me smile. I wonder if there might be a local group of Gabriel Method folk who meet somewhere here.

Thanks for doing the videos for us Brian.

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Hi Robin, thanks for your question.
Unfortunately hard for me to say what is best for you however I am sure your physio has the correct techniques for helping you.
As the ITB’s are giving you pain and certainly wouldn’t help the arthritis I would like you to watch this clip I did
      https://members.thegabrielmethod.com/itb-stretches/
      hope that helps.
Next time you’re in the park make sure to say G’Day!
      Thanks for your post,
      Brian

  8. Sharon H says:

What a great way to start the morning. Your program was on at 6 am here in Michigan. You didn’t even think asking for a simple first step was stupid. Thank you. I did do the 20 second bit you did at the end.. program was over but so you didn’t get my last comment on chatroll. Could you ever consider a selection like Jon’s visualizations butlet it be simple simple am routine that we could do. Just as simple and quick as Jon’s vis? Ican create a discipline around something like that. With an opportunity like that there would be a focus to talk it through on theforum if we meet a stumble…… rest assured I would meet a stumble. Just a thought…. but it is so great keeping time with you in your home…..thanks.. Sharon

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Hi Sharon, great to have you join me at 6am, impressive! We are always open to suggestions of ways to make GM more user friendly so thanks for the ideas.
In the meantime work on initiating your core abdominal muscles, and do what you can when you can.
      Thanks again, great idea.
      Kind regards
      Brian

  9. Molo says:

once the video started to work right, I loved it! thank you so much Brian. sorry I got your name wrong below, lol. I don’t know where i got David from. I will enjoy doing more of these every time and plan on using this one until I see another. what a great idea!

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

I am sorry for the technical problems Molo.
We are working on improving it and I hope by next Hang Out we will have a seamless stream. Unfortunately we are governed a little by the internet speed we can achieve at any given time.
      Thanks for connecting!
      Brian

      • Molo says:

oh please dot apologize, i was just not certain in the beginning if it was going to work. I sure wish i had checked my e-mail in time to be with you live. I loved it though and am looking forward to them in the future.

  10. Molo says:

there are huge glitches in this while trying to watch. David keeps freezing.

  11. Sandra Neill says:

Are you familiar with this HIIT app? https://www.skimble.com/workouts
I like to follow along to something so having an app with guided exercises works well. Some of the workouts have 20/10 seconds exercise and rest periods and other have longer periods (esp for strength training) like 60-90 seconds with 10+ seconds. Would either be good or should we stick to 20/10?

    • Sandra Neill says:

Oops, Maybe I should have viewed the entire video before askingthis question – so longer duration fine for resistance training until your feel the burn, right?

Couple more questions: would it be good to do yoga or stretching exercises one the rest day or better to do it on the work out day?

If you are just starting out and are still sore 2-3 days after does that indicate that you trained too hard or your body needs more time to rest, or should you push through with another workout (ie every second day even if you feel sore)?

      • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

        Hi Sandra,
yes it may take longer than 20 seconds for the Resistance Stage so that works well. The Get Thin Get Eaten is normally up to 30 seconds maximum.
If you are sore I would rest, maybe a stretch and something light if you feel the need to train. Rest is a big part of GM Fitness as it is in this space you get the improvement. Oh and you could stretch and do yoga basis if you can. The more ‘Bendy’ the better. Thanks for your post, Brian

  12. Sandra Neill says:

    Hi Brian
I enjoy doing Zumba – how can I incorporate GTGE into a Zumba class?

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Yes Sandra, we like to focus on the principle of ADDING at GM, and I would love you to keep with the Zumba and add some GM Fitness to it.
      Sound good?
      Brian

      • Sandra Neill says:

So you mean, add it on instead of incorporating it within Zumba?

        • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Yes if you love to Zumba I’d add some GM Fitness Sandra. Not sure of the structure of a Zumba class bit if it was possible to incorporate it into the class that would work too. Hope that helps!
          Brian

  13. Donna O says:

Hi Coach when is the next. ” live chat “?? Hope I can make it!

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Not too sure Donna but we will post it in the Upcoming Events. I’d expect in the next couple of weeks. Hope it fits your schedule.

  14. Donna O says:

I just wanted to let you know that I have been doing these exercises kneeling ‘tall’ on my firm bed. Mostly to protect my knees and legs and get used to the activity… and I can feel the muscles working all the way down my legs! What a great sensation without having to wait for a warm enough day (-13 today) to walk outside. I have abused my arms, wrists, shoulders, neck and back my entire life hauling around a steadily growing woman on crutches and wheelchair. They used to be strong but as they weakened they just got saggy and ugly, so I am really looking forward to a change and these exercises are so fun and doable, Thank you!

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Hi Donna, I am so glad you are able to enjoy these movements.
Keep going and let me know if you need any help.
Be great to connect with you live on my next Ask Brian show.

  15. Donna OBrien says:

Does it matter if I squeeze these great moves in right before bed? That seems to be the best time for me to focus back on myself….

  16. Donna OBrien says:

Hi Coach Brian! I just now joined the Support Group and tried your video but it keeps getting lost. I missed your class in the NYNY program but have a question for you. well one to start with…
I wear two below knee prosthetics, one for a partial foot and one for a bk amputation. I find it hard to move quickly or off the ground, kneel, or much of anything beyond short short walks at my weight. I am currently also experiencing some stump damage that won’t heal so it is hard to wear the rt leg prosthetic for very long. I do some yoga on my bed in the morning to simply be able to move. My question is (finally :D) once the skin on my leg heals enough, can I accomplish a Coach Brian GM type workout in the pool? I was a great swimmer once upon a time but an asthma reaction to chlorine in the pool and open wounds have kept me out of it for some time but I am very much looking forward to go back to it!

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

For sure Donna a Gm Work In in the pool is excellent. Actually I really like the idea especiall ig=f you have some weight on, less stress on the joints but able to do the intensity needed…..safely.
I would be keen for you to start some resistance training asap, to get your strength up and once stump healed you are on your way.
      Sound good?

  17. Bette says:

    Hi Brian,

Just now I watched your video of the live Hangout show for the first time. It was live at 2 a.m. my time. Thanks for saving it for us. Everything is very helpful and exactly what I need to keep myself motivated since I tire so easily. I like the way you give us information about what can be slowing or stopping our weight loss. Even though I knew about them from Jon’s videos, hearing them again helps a lot. I am learning how to lose fat in a healthy way, rather than my old way of starving it off. Oh, and one thing that is particularly helpful is the part about strengthening the glutes and hip muscles to help support body weight and keep it from going directly to the knees. I had mostly been working the quads for that, and will include more hip and gluteus strengthening work. Thanks for the warning about the elastic bands, it was a little bit humorous – I mean, oh my gosh, that must really have hurt!! I am going to buy some bands and don’t need any snap back pain (!) Your list of anti-inflammatory foods is a big help, I knew about some of them but you included a couple that I like and didn’t know were anti-inflammatory, and I’m going to buy some today. This Hangout video was so very helpful and motivating to me that I’m going to call The Gabriel Method staff and tell them to change my recent request about cancelling my membership (it was only due to financial reasons). I want to see your next Hangout so much that I will find a way to keep my membership at least one more month. I hope this tells you something about how good this first Hangout is. Bette

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

Thanks Bette I really appreciate your input here. I am glad to hear you are hanging in there for another month too. Good luck with your journey, have fun experimenting with the different foods and new life. Any questions just let me know and look forward to ‘hanging out’ with you next month.
      All the best,
      Brian

  18. Natalie Georgiou says:

    Hi Brian

Are there any particular excercises you recommend for knees? Whenever I flex or bend my knees they always sound like footsteps on gravel but don’t usually hurt. However recently while exercising I do occasionally feel slight discomfort. I was thinking if a knee support while exercising would be a good idea or if this would make things worse in the long term by weakening the muscles?

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

      Hey Natalie,
Let’s talk about this next hangout and I’ll show you some exercises you can do to help with your knee.
In the meantime a knee support would be a good idea.
      All the best,
      Brian

  19. Frances Lockstone says:

Thankyou so much I rely enjoyed that and it has explained the ‘burn’ and why it is so helpful to my cells. I am having to fly solo for a few weeks so will take your great session away with me and use it till I join you all again.

  20. Margie C says:

I am so grateful that you make this available as a recording! This live webinar takes place at 2am in my time zone and I have a difficult time participating and still being up in the morning for my life’s commitments.

Thank you for all that you do!

    • Brian Killian -Gabriel Method Coach says:

      That’s fine Margie.
I hope you can join me live for my next show.
I want to get everyone up and moving GM style with me.
Thanks for taking the time to connect.
      All the best,
      Brian

  21. Erica Liebenberg says:

    Great session thanks Brian!!

  22. Kathleen says:

Thanks Brian!!! I missed the live session (5AM here in Detroit) so I’m catching the recording. The exercises are great and given I am 100 lbs overweight, they were doable and helped me feel very positive about exercising. Thank you so very much!

    • Coach Brian says:

      Hi Kathleen,
thank you so much for connecting with me.
I am glad to hear the exercises were do-able for you. My intention is to have everyone in GM moving and feeling good about it.
Any suggestions just let me know.
Next ‘hang out’ we hope to be at a time when you can join me live.
      All the best,
      Brian
